For the first time since MSHSAA has gone to the current football playoff format, the Blue Jays will play for a district championship game.

The Liberty football team advanced to the Class 5 District 8 title game thanks to convincing 34-7 semifinal victory against St. Joseph Central tonight at William Jewell College's Greene Stadium.

Junior running back Robert Rawie put the team on his shoulders, rushing the ball a career-high 45 times for 275 yards and two touchdowns. His 2-yard TD plunge early in the fourth quarter made the score 21-7 with 10 minutes to play in the game.

Kaiden Hulett ended any thoughts the Indians had about a comeback with a 35-yard pick-six that extended the lead to 28-7 with 8:36 left. Brennen Hicks put the icing on the cake, returning another interception 93 yards for a touchdown in the final minute.

Liberty will take on top-seeded Staley in the district final at 7 p.m. Friday, Nov. 4, at the North Kansas City Schools District Activities Complex. The Falcons defeated Liberty North, 25-14, in the semifinals tonight at the NKC DAC.

North led 14-7 in the first half, but Staley scored the final 18 points of the game. The Falcons tied it up at halftime, and then took control in the second half behind a defense that forced three interceptions and caused a safety.
