KEARNEY — Kearney police are investigating what led to a death and an assault involving a firearm after officers responded to a single-family residence in the early morning hours of Sunday, Sept. 8.

Police were called to the house in the 1200 block Geneva Street at 4:54 a.m. and discovered two residents in the house suffered gunshot wounds.

Police Public Information Officer Lt. John Stewart said the matter is being handled as a death investigation and an assault investigation.

“It’s an ongoing investigation, but we don’t expect charges to be filed at this point,” he said.

Upon arrival, first responders found James Medley, 48, deceased with a gunshot wound to the head and a 39-year-old female who also suffered a gunshot wound. A handgun was recovered from the scene.

The woman was transported to an area hospital, where she underwent surgery.

“She’s recovering from some pretty serious injuries,” said Stewart, adding she is expected to survive.

The woman’s name has not been released.
