SMITHVILLE — A fire that broke out on Easter afternoon left a single-family residence in the Harborview subdivision in ruin.

Smithville Area Fire Protection District Chief Dave Cline said fire crews responded to the fire call at 2:35 p.m. Sunday, April 1, at 504 Marina Drive.

The fire, he said, began in the garage.

“It went really fast,” he said of the extreme heat that tore through the dark-colored house, riddling the structure with dark plumes of smoke and flames.

One male occupant was in the residence at the time of the fire but was able to escape.

“Absolutely, he was fortunate,” Cline said.

The house, which suffered extensive damage throughout, is not repairable.

“They’re ruling it a total loss,” Cline said.

The cause, the chief said, is undetermined at this point, but is under investigation by the state fire marshal’s office.
