River man flees police

Smithville Police Capt. Tony Roetman said officers were called after the housing authority manager had an issue with a man who had allegedly been staying in his mother’s residence although he wasn’t supposed to.

“It was one of those things where we kept trying to get a hold of him,” Roetman said. “... Rather than just leaving, he ran from officers.”

After running about 100 yards, Roetman said the man jumped in Little Platte River.

“He quickly realized there wasn’t really anywhere for him to go,” the officer said. “He floated on his back for a second and finally came out.”

The man was arrested on allegations of trespassing, possession of narcotic equipment and resisting arrest. He was released the same day.
