KEARNEY — One person was transported by Kearney Fire and Rescue Protection District to an area hospital after a wreck occurred on Missouri Highway 33 ahead of the city's July 3 celebration.

Fire district personnel said the wreck occurred 6:46 p.m. Wednesday, July 3, as a long line of traffic began to back up along Highway 33 as throngs of people waited to get into Jesse James Park, located north of downtown, ahead of the annual Switch concert and fireworks display honoring Independence Day.

Firefighter and EMT Andy Martens said it was a rear-end accident.

“It was minor injuries," said Fire Marshal Jeff Fort, adding the person was taken to an area hospital as a precaution. Outside of the minor accident, Kearney was quiet and safe during the July 4 holiday period, he said.

The name of the person injured was not been released.
