Gilbert Edward Kroeger, 80, of Kearney, Missouri, passed away peacefully on August 28, 2019, at North Kansas City Hospital.
Gil was born on August 27th, 1939, in Brookfield Missouri, son of Gilbert H. Kroeger D.O and Nellie E. Kroeger (Pulliam) R.N. who both preceded him in death. He was a graduate of the Missouri Military Academy, Mexico, Missouri; and attended Northeast Missouri State University (Truman State) in Kirksville, Missouri.
Gil was married to the love of his life, Joyce A. Birkeness, on June 30th, 1962. They had two sons together, David G. Kroeger and Sean M. Kroeger. Both Joyce and Sean preceded him in death.
Gil’s other surviving family include David’s wife, Joan Kroeger; his grandchildren, Brent D. Kroeger, Jonathon B. Kroeger, Emily M. Spreitzer; and stepsister Judy Hill of Bethany, Missouri. Gil’s grandson, Matthew N. Kroeger, preceded him in death as well as his stepmother, Crystal L. (Chris) Kroeger of Bethany, Missouri.
Gil enlisted in the U.S Army Reserves and spent time in Germany as a military police officer after graduation. He was involved in the moving and trucking industry in Kansas City until his retirement as Vice President of Operations for Superior Moving Company. He was very active in various capacities as President of the Kansas City area Jaycees and President of the Missouri Movers Association. Gil had also served as Alumni Board President at the Missouri Military Academy; he is listed on MMA’s Wall of Honor for his Military Service.
In retirement, Gil enjoyed spending time with family and friends, playing golf, and researching the Kroeger family genealogy. He loved eating out at interesting local restaurants for BBQ, oysters and German food. In the winter, he enjoyed feeding his local bird population. He was a rabid Missouri Tiger fan. Gil did extensive traveling to visit his many friends, family and high school classmates scattered around the country. He was a generous and kind person to everyone he met. He will be dearly missed.
A casual visitation and celebration of Gil’s life will be held from 5:30-8 p.m., Sunday, October 13, 2019, at the Kearney Firehouse Community Center, 106 S. Jefferson St, Kearney, MO 64060. Gils’s ashes will be interred at Hillcrest Cemetery in Excelsior Springs, Missouri.
