Learn about Clay County candidates on the November ballot at an Oct. 20 forum

In many ways over many years, it has been said an informed citizenry is vital to the success of a community.

This is a statement we at The Kearney Courier believe to our core. Each week we strive to educate our readers about the events surrounding and affecting their daily lives, including the happenings of the ongoing election cycle.

On Nov. 8, Clay County voters will make their picks for several federal, state and local offices, as well as decide a handful of state amendments and local ballot issues. Since initial filing for county offices began, our staff has worked to introduce you to the candidates through our print and digital formats, with more coverage planned through election night.

This year, The Courier and its sister papers, Liberty Tribune, Gladstone Dispatch and The Smithville Herald, are hosting another opportunity for residents to learn about those individuals wishing to serve in county government. From 7 to 9 p.m. Thursday, Oct. 20, the newspapers will host a Clay County candidate forum at Woodneath Library Center, 8900 N. Flintlock Road, Kansas City. Candidates for eastern commissioner, western commissioner, assessor, sheriff and public administrator will be in attendance to discuss their ideas directly before an audience of potential voters. Additionally, a representative of Mid-Continent Public Library will have the opportunity to talk about the library system’s 8-cent operating levy increase proposal. Questions for the candidates will be taken at the door.

We strongly encourage you to attend this event and bring along your family, neighbors and coworkers, as it will be an evening dedicated to the voters of our county. We hope you will leave informed and ready to select the candidates you believe will best serve Clay County, and spend your tax dollars, for the next four years.
