Greg Gabriel, the senior talent evaluator at Pro Football Weekly and author of the annual Pro Football Weekly Draft Guide, was named the Director of Player Personnel for the XFL’s new Washington franchise.

Gabriel brings to the XFL three decades of NFL scouting experience, including a decade as the Chicago Bears Director of College Scouting and most recently with the Philadelphia Eagles. Prior to working in Chicago, Gabriel spent two seasons scouting for his hometown Buffalo Bills and then 16 seasons in the New York Giants personnel department.

In 2015, Gabriel was hired by PFW to head our draft coverage and authored five annual Draft Guides. With the help of Gabriel’s keen eye for talent and unique NFL background, PFW’s publication has been the No. 1 best-seller in a growing industry.

Upon hearing the news, PFW Executive Editor Hub Arkush said, “I first got to know Greg when he was hired by the Bears and I was the color commentator for games on their radio network. “By nature, NFL scouts are among the great ‘grinders’ in all of sports, but what I first noticed about Greg was he took his work ethic to another level.

“I already knew he was a great scout from the Super Bowl clubs he helped build in New York, and the gems he unearthed in Chicago, including Lance Briggs, Charles Tillman, Tommie Harris and a number of other future Pro Bowlers who formed the core of the Bears 2006 Super Bowl team and the 2010 club that played for the NFC title.

“His work these past five years on our Pro Football Weekly Draft Guide has been outstanding and more than carried on the storied history of Joel Buchsbaum and Nolan Nawrocki.

“It is always great to see good things happen to great people and good friends, and while I know our friendship will continue always, we wish him nothing but the best with his latest challenge.”

Gabriel will work closely with Washington's new coach Pep Hamilton, who was the Bears QB coach from 2007-09.

"You can’t teach experience, and that’s what he brings to the table," Hamilton said. "He’s someone that has a strong opinion with regards to his evaluations and what he’s identified in players to be their strengths and weaknesses, and you’re not talking him out of it. That’s really what I wanted. I didn’t want anybody to feel like they had to be a 'yes man,' and I know that’s not what Greg is. We developed a good working relationship with the Bears, and I’m excited to see the type of players that he can bring to our XFL DC franchise."
