Bicycle donations still needed in Kearney

KEARNEY — While the community has donated more than 15 bicycles for children in need to Dan Lechner's Farmers Insurance Agency, Lechner said the amount is less than half of what is needed in the Kearney area.

Lechner began accepting donations of gently-used or new bicycles along with cash and gift cards for children in need this summer after receiving requests from children and their families at the school district's annual resource fair.

“We've given away 16, which is great, but we need more,” he said. “We had a request for 41.”

Any type of children's bike, as long as it new or gently-used, can be donated at Lechner's office, located at 404 S. Jefferson St.

“The gently-used part is important because if we end up with more than we need we will give away the rest to the Kearney Family Foundation,” he said. The foundation works each winter holiday season to provide families in need in the Kearney School District with three months worth of food items, personal care items and gifts for family members.
