SMITHVILLE — With help from Mid-America Regional Council, Smithville is hosting a household hazardous waste collection event beginning at 8 a.m. Saturday, Sept. 21, at Smithville High School, 645 S. Commercial Ave.
The event will run until noon or until the truck is full. Rain or shine, the event will go on.
Accepted materials include automotive fluids, batteries, paint, fluorescent bulbs, lawn and garden chemicals and household cleaners. Each of these items has hazardous properties and cannot be thrown out with regular trash.
"This event offers a safe way to properly dispose of unwanted hazardous waste and helps to protect public health and safety," a press release states.
No business waste will be accepted. This includes nonprofits, churches, home-based business and rental properties.
The city seeks volunteers who are 18 years or older. Jobs for volunteers include signing in cars and trucks as they enter, traffic control, unloading vehicles and sorting unloaded items. Anyone interested in volunteering can send contact information to firstname.lastname@example.org. Gloves, aprons and eye protection will be provided.
