Honoring fallen vets with wreaths

The Harrison family of Evan, Jenny, Chad, Madelynn and Maleah volunteer their time Saturday, Dec. 19 to lay Christmas wreaths on the graves of Smithville veterans in Smithville Memorial Cemetery off U.S. Highway 169 as part of the Wreaths Across America wreath-laying day. During the annual event, volunteers across the nation laid wreaths on the graves of veterans in cemeteries throughout the United States.

Before laying wreaths on veterans' graves, Smithville American Legion hosted a ceremony that included remarks from keynote speaker Mayor Damien Boley as well as the playing of "Taps" and firing of honorary shots from the legion's Honor Guard.

As part of the wreath-laying event in Liberty, veterans, current servicemen and family members laid wreaths at the Veterans Memorial site in Fairview-New Hope cemeteries. All branches of service were honored as were prisoners of war and those missing in action.
