As Memorial Day is Monday, May 29, two communities will offer ceremonies of remembrance.
Smithville
Beginning at 10:30 a.m., the American Legion Auxiliary Unit 58 will host a program at the Smithville Memorial Cemetery, located off U.S. Highway 169.
Guest speaker will be retired Master Sgt. Christopher Campbell. The American Legion Band will perform and there will be a rifle volley from the Honor Guard. In case of inclement weather, the program will move to American Legion Post No. 58 at 2607 Missouri Highway 92.
Liberty
At noon, members of VFW Post No. 4043 and American Legion Post No. 95 will be present at the Veterans Memorial in Fairview-New Hope Cemeteries at the corner of West Shrader Street and South Terrace Avenue in Liberty.
The brief ceremony will recognize veterans who have passed. There will be a laying of wreaths and flowers at the veteran’s memorial, a 21-gun salute and “Taps” played.
