Car sails through closed garage, stopped by pool

Smithville Police and firefighters from the Smithville Area Fire Protection District responded after a driver plowed through a house Thursday, Nov. 14, on Shannon Avenue. The car was stopped by an above-ground pool.

SMITHVILLE — Firefighters, police and Smithville EMS responded to a reported car driven through a house around 1 p.m. Thursday, Nov. 14, in the 500 block of Shannon Avenue in Smithville.

Smithville Area Fire Protection District Chief Dave Cline said the car seemingly rocked from the street through the garage, out the back of the garage wall and was stopped by an above-ground swimming pool.

“The house suffered significant damage and the driver was transported with minor injuries,” Cline said. “Cause of the accident is not yet determined. I know the Smithville Police Department is still investigating. I believe if the car had not hit the above-ground pool, it would have gone through the fence and into the field behind the neighborhood.”

The driver was taken to an area hospital, Cline said.

“It's definitely not that routine and it's out of the ordinary as far as a call goes,” he said.
