The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints of Kearney

The church had leadership changes for the Kearney Ward on Nov. 10. The newly called bishop is Joseph Whitehead. Whitehead is a dentist in Excelsior Springs and he and his family moved to the area in July from Iowa. He will be assisted by counselors Jeff Durfee, Jr. and Steve Guzman. These callings generally last for approximately five years. The church has a lay ministry, meaning all positions held in local wards are voluntary. They serve the needs of the members under their care while pursuing outside vocations. The Kearney Ward meets from 10:30 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. each Sunday, at 202 West 19th St.

St. James Catholic Church of Liberty

The congregation of the church, 309 S. Stewart Road, will look continue to look at the Novena, a traditional devotion, each week through December. The Novena was written by a Spanish priest, Roman DeVera, sometime between 1904 and 1920. The location will be in the conference rooms in the newly remodeled Resource Center located in the former St. James business offices. The devotion will be Saturdays at 6:15 p.m. except for the last devotional, which will be announced at a later date. December dates are Dec. 7, 14, 21 and 28.

Precious Blood Renewal Center of Liberty

From 9 a.m. to 2 p.m., Saturday, Dec. 14, there will be an Advent Day of Reflection. The lessons will include looking at the infancy narrative according to the gospel of Matthew. Pleasant Valley Baptist Church of Liberty

Members of the congregation will meet from 10:30 to 11:30 a.m. in room 309 of the church, 1600 N. Missouri Highway 291, for Prayer for America. Prayers are in conversational style. Those who want to pray silently will be able to. Call 781-5959 for more details.

First Christian Church of Smithville

A Christmas concert featuring River City Reeds Saxophone Quartet will begin at 3 p.m. at the church, 201 N. Bridge St. Following the concert will be a reception.
