The Missouri Department of Transportation's Kansas City District has concluded its 2019 Snow Academy. The academy is to help prepare maintenance workers and supplemental support forces for upcoming winter operations.

Those who have been with the Kansas City district less than five years took part in the training. The academy featured in-class instruction, focusing on the various types of equipment used in snow as well as types of materials including salt, salt brine and beet juice. The lion's share of the in-class training focused on safety and best practices.

The snow academy also featured several hands-on training events. An obstacle course for plow drivers is included to show them how to maneuver their vehicle safely and efficiently. Another station on the course included front loader training, where operators simulated loading salt into plow trucks.

Other stations focused on how to install snow chains on tires, changing and standing salt spreaders and how to safely attach plow blades.
