The St. Joseph Police Department officer charged with domestic assault appeared for the first time in court on Wednesday morning.

Ron Strader, a 17-year veteran of the department, was charged with a class A misdemeanor of fourth-degree domestic assault after officers responded to a domestic disturbance call on Sunday afternoon, according to a press release from the Buchanan County Prosecuting Attorney's Office. The victim allegedly was dragged by Strader, leading to injuries on her nose, knees and elbows.

On Wednesday morning, Strader appeared in Judge Rebecca Spencer's court and waived the reading of his charges. Strader did not have an attorney at the time of the hearing, and a plea of not guilty was entered by the court for him. He was released on a recognizance bond on Monday.

Strader has been relieved of all police authority while the criminal proceedings and an internal investigation are conducted. If convicted, Strader could lose the rights to carry a firearm as a private citizen, though his on-duty rights are debatable under the law.
