Billy Lee Maples, 89, of Smithville, MO passed away on Oct. 11, 2020.
Born on June 3, 1931, Billy was one of thirteen children born to Thomas and Maggie Maples. He grew up and attend high school in Reed Springs, Missouri, which is where he met the love of his life, Arvilla Shirkey. Billy and Arvilla were married on July 10, 1950, and from this marriage had three children.
Billy’s hard work ethic and knowledge of construction eventually lead to him starting his own concrete business, Mid State Forms Inc., which he and his family have owned and operated since 1955. When he wasn’t hard at work, he spent much of the time on his lawnmower at the family farm, hunting quail and pheasant, watching anything with John Wayne and playing sports, specifically, golf, bowling, archery, and fast pitch softball. Billy’s natural athletic abilities led to many perfect 300 games in bowling, multiple eagles on the golf course, receiving a full-ride scholarship offer to play football though having never played before and the opportunity to try out for the San Francisco Giants baseball team.
There was nothing he couldn’t accomplish when he put his mind to it, but what he loved most was being with his family. He especially loved babysitting the little ones.
Billy was preceded in death by his parents; son, Billy Dewayne Maples; and ten siblings.
He will be fondly remembered and greatly missed by his wife of 70 years, Arvilla; children, Shannon and Shonnie Maples; grandchildren, Rachel and Billy Dalton; brothers, Paul and Marvin Maples; and many extended family and friends.
Services will be held at Terrace Park Funeral Home & Cemetery on Sunday, October 18th, with visitation from 10:00 – 11:30am, followed by the funeral and graveside services.
In lieu of flowers, contributions may be made to Crossroads Hospice.
