Congressman Graves hosts Future Leaders Academy

U.S. Rep. Sam Graves leads a Future Leaders Academy, welcoming students who have shown leadership skills from across northern Missouri. Students from Liberty, Liberty North, Kearney and Smithville high schools attended the event.

Over 200 high school students, including from Liberty, Liberty North, Kearney and Smithville high schools, came together with other north Missouri students Thursday, Oct. 1, at Missouri Western State University in St. Joseph to participate in U.S. Rep. Sam Graves' annual Future Leaders Academy.

"These students are among the best and brightest in north Missouri," Graves said. "I believe the Future Leaders Academy is a great opportunity for these students to learn more about local leaders and how to apply leadership principles to their dialing lives as they become active citizens in their respective communities."

Students were nominated by their respective high schools based on academic performance, civic engagement and demonstrated leadership ability.

Topic discussed included military leadership, learning from leadership mistakes and women in leadership. Speakers included representatives from Missouri Western, Missouri Air National Guard's 139th Airlift Wing, Northwest Missouri State University, United Way of St. Joseph and keynote speaker Mark Laney, CEO of Mosaic Life Care.
