Blue Jays finish ninth after heartbreaking DQ

LIBERTY — Liberty High School opened its 2019-20 campaign by topping a top-10 ranked Lawrence High School team 77-64 Saturday, Dec. 7, at home.

Lawrence High School entered the season as the No. 5 ranked boys team in the Kansas Basketball Coaches Association Class 6A preseason rankings. Those rankings were released Nov. 26.

Liberty also entered the contest as a top-10 team.

The Missouri Basketball Coaches Association voted the Jays No. 9 in the Class 5 preseason poll released Nov. 26.

Behind 19 first-half points by Javion Byers and Grant Stubbs’ 29 points, the Jays won the top-10 matchup.

“It’s a solid win over a very good team,” a Tweet from the team’s Twitter account read.

The Jays stayed at home for the second game of the season as they hosted Fort Osage on Tuesday, Dec. 10.
