The Liberty Blue Jays placed fourth at a 21-team Kansas City Classic on Oct. 4 and 5, at the Henley Aquatic Center in Independence.

Caden Murphy and Tait Harvey had the Blue Jays’ top finishes to help the team to 175 points, tying Staley for fourth place.

Murphy won the 500-yard freestyle with a time of 4:56.13 and took second in the 200 freestyle in 1:48.59 for a total of 37 points.

Harvey registered a runner-up finish in the 200 IM, clocking in for a personal best time of 2:00.80.

“Overall, as a team, I thought we did much better than I thought we were going to,” Liberty coach Chris Murphy said. “It was a very solid top to bottom meet for us.”

To this point, the Blue Jays have state qualifying cuts from Caden Murphy in four events, Harvey in five and Alex Hill in the 100 backstroke and Jacob Shaw in the 100 breaststroke. Additionally, Liberty has three relay teams qualified — 200 medley, 200 freestyle and 400 freestyle.

In more recent action, Liberty and Liberty North hosted Park Hill South in a triangular meet Tuesday, Oct. 8, at the Liberty Community Center.

In head-to-head scoring, the Blue Jays defeated the Eagles 172-125. Park Hill South won both of its dual matchups, beating Liberty 199-112 and Liberty North 172-125.

Harvey registered a win in the 200 freestyle and a runner-up in the 100 freestyle.

Caleb Ahart and Alex Hill took second while the 200 freestyle relay also was second.

Caden Murphy did not swim in the tri due to an injury, coach Murphy said.

Liberty’s divers Ethan Freidel (175 points) and Sam Jones (181) had personal best scores. Freidel was third and Jones was fourth.

“Both our divers were great,” coach Murphy said. “They were probably the highlight of the meet I’d say. They did really well.”

“We were really focused on returning to form with it being our first meet in about a week and a half,” Liberty North coach Mark Warner said. “We’re just building to conference at this point.”

Adam Bosse recorded a win in the 100 butterfly and a runner-up finish in the 200 IM.

The Eagles’ 200 medley relay team placed second and Jake Anderson-Jones was third in the 100 breaststroke.

North has two state qualifiers — Bosse in three events and Andrew Augustine in the 100 breaststroke.

Both Liberty squads will have senior night Wednesday, Oct. 16, at the Liberty Community Center.
