Veteran Liberty girls return four starters

Liberty's Jillian Fleming eyes the basketball during a game against Liberty North last season. Fleming, a senior, is one of four returning starters for the Blue Jays.

LIBERTY — The Liberty girls basketball team has achieved four 20-win seasons in the last five years.

Within that successful five-year stretch, the Blue Jays have made deep postseason runs on three occasions. They claimed runner-up honors in 2015, third place in 2016, a district title in 2017 and fourth place in 2018.

Last season, Liberty’s district title streak ended at four when North Kansas City beat the Blue Jays to end their season at 21-6.

But Liberty returns four starters from last season’s squad that went 21-6 overall and 9-3 in conference play.

Seniors Jillian Fleming, Olivia Nelson and Mary Mason lead the experienced group.

All three achieved all-district and all-conference honors last season. Fleming is a Northwest Missouri State signee. Nelson is a University of Central Missouri signee.

The Blue Jays open the season in their home gymnasium at 6:30 p.m. Dec. 7, as they’ll host Lee’s Summit West in the 810 Tip-Off Classic.

Liberty will then play in a tournament at Olathe East Dec. 10 to 13. They’ll also travel to Rockwood Summit for a tournament Dec. 26 to 28.
