State qualifier Mickelson to lead Liberty North golf in second season

Liberty North’s Averi Mickelson putts during district action last season at Paradise Pointe Golf Course at Smithville Lake. Mickelson returns to the course this season as a sophomore.

LIBERTY — Averi Mickelson has only one year of prep golf under her belt, but it was a productive one.

Mickelson, a Liberty North sophomore, posted a noteworthy rookie campaign, earning a district title and placing 30th at the state championships.

“Averi is coming off the best season for any freshman in North history,” Eagles coach Jeffrey Braden said.

Mickelson, who took 10th at sectionals, will lead teammates Olivia Hellerich, Kaitlyn Lafferty, Kamryn Rowell, Kate Braden and Emmy Braden.

Last season Liberty North took fourth at conference. This year the Eagles are looking for more.

“We have a group of young, competitive and hardworking girls that are focused on getting better,” coach Braden said.

This year will be about getting better, but I think we can be competitive. … We are looking to bring home conference and district titles, and advance to the state tournament.”
