Cardinals picked to finish 10th, 15th in GLVC basketball polls

The William Jewell College Cardinals basketball teams are counting down to their season openers as the Great Lakes Valley Conference basketball preseason polls were released this week.

The Jewell women were selected to finish in 10th place in the GLVC by the league’s coaches, the GLVC announced Wednesday, Oct. 16. Jewell’s men were picked to finish 15th.

Jewell’s women return first team all-league pick Kiara Bradley and Liberty native Sydney Offield. Bradley averaged 13.7 points and 5.6 rebounds per game last season while Offield averaged just under 10 points per game.

The Cardinals graduated all-conference player Kayla Harrell and Natalie Closser.

Jewell’s women open the season Nov. 9 in the GLVC/GLIAC Crossover Challenge in Romeoville, Illinois.

The Jewell men return Eysan Wiley for his junior season after he was named to the all-GLVC defensive team last year.

Mason Alexander is also back after being named to the league’s all-freshman team.

The team graduated its leading scorer and two-time all-GLVC honoree Keith Hayes.

The Cardinals will open the Chris McCabe era Nov. 8 in the GLVC/GLIAC Crossover Challenge.

Bellarmine was picked to win the GLVC in the men’s poll while national semifinalist Drury was selected to win on the women’s side.Taking advantage of three Jewell fumbles, the Bearcats (3-3, 1-2) scored on all three change of possessions to ultimately get revenge on the Cardinals. The Cardinals earned a nonconference win over Southwest Baptist back in week 1 in Liberty.
