SMITHVILLE — A St. Joseph man drowned in Smithville Lake while trying to help a child who was drifting away from their boat.
Fall armyworm migrates from the south, flying hundreds of miles northward. This pest has been found the last two weeks feeding in grass pastures, summer grass annuals, alfalfa and soybeans in south Missouri, so farmers should scout local crops, reports the University of Missouri Extension.
The annual Crystal Kipper & Ali Kemp Memorial Award was presented to Rasta, a Northland courtroom therapy dog, and the golden retriever’s handler and owner Jennifer Vernon. The award, presented each spring, honors the memories of murdered teens Ali Kemp and Crystal Kipper.
CLAY COUNTY — Trial dates in 2025 are scheduled for two brothers charged in the shooting that injured two earlier this year at North Kansas City High School. The shooting occurred outside a basketball game on March 2 and involved two groups.
LIBERTY — With Liberty Fall Festival less than a month away, organizers are still seeking sponsors and accepting parade entries. Sponsorships give donors a chance to have their name seen and for certain levels, websites and social media coverage on promotional materials as well.
CLAY COUNTY — A Smithville man suffered serious injuries in a motorcycle crash Saturday, Aug. 24.

GLADSTONE — The Northland Shepherd’s Center seeks volunteers to help with several programs within the nonprofit. Each weekday, Northland Shepherd’s Center volunteers donate time and talents to fulfill a variety of needs in an array of programs such as transportation drivers, handy helpers, Phone Pals, Meals on Wheels, Plate of Hope Food Pantry, fundraiser support and administrative support.
