SMITHVILLE — Two career exploration events are coming to Smithville schools in February and March and as such, the schools seek volunteers.

KEARNEY — The annual Kearney Wine and Chocolate Spectacular from Kearney Enrichment Council will begin at 3:30 p.m. Saturday, Feb. 8.

CLAY COUNTY — A chance for Clay County residents to meet with Missouri House of Representatives and Senate members over coffee and pastries will be Friday, Jan. 31, at the Gladstone campus of Northwest Missouri State University, located at 6889 N. Oak Trafficway. The event runs from 8 to 10 a.m.
Censorship is counter-intuitive to a free, open and healthy society. When one idea or viewpoint is squashed because of bias or ignorance, it creates a social order where creativity is stymied, blunted and discouraged. We see a social order that has become closed-mined with very narrow viewpoints, tunnel vision and is myopic in its thinking.
Since becoming state director for Missouri USDA Rural Development, it’s been important to me that we make the dream of home ownership accessible so that families in our rural communities can continue their traditions in their very own homes. USDA Rural Development’s Single-Family Housing Programs offer loans and grants to eligible families in rural areas — this includes loans to individuals and families, including first-time homebuyers, to purchase homes as well as loans and grants to homeowners needing repairs to make their homes safe for their families.
In recent weeks, much has been written about our 39th president, Jimmy Carter, in the celebration of his long life. That’s how I learned of his heroism in 1952.

Rural communities are seeing a boom in renewable energy development. Whether it’s wind energy or solar energy, communities reap the benefits from increased tax revenues, new job creation and local lease payments. Better yet, communities can unlock additional benefits through Community Benefit Agreements.

SMITHVILLE — After putting together great careers at Smithville High School, multiple athletes singed letters of intent to play at the next level.

Smithville girls swimming and diving put together a historic weekend in the COMO Invitational Friday and Saturday, Jan. 10 and 11 in Columbia.
