Charles Stewart Shepherd, 94, of Liberty, Missouri, passed away on January 5, 2025, at McCrite Plaza at Briarcliff, Kansas City, Missouri, after a short illness. Stewart was born on November 28, 1930, in Bethany, Missouri, to Harlan and Doris Zimmerlee Shepherd. His family relocated to Liberty, Missouri, in 1942, where Stewart attended Liberty High School, graduating in 1948. He married his high school sweetheart, Rose Marie (Rosie) Cantlon, in 1951.
Continuing the military tradition of his grandfather and father, Stewart joined the United States Air Force in 1951, serving as a staff sergeant for drafting at Andrews Air Force Base in Newfoundland, Canada. After his service, he earned a degree in Architecture from the University of Kansas. His career took him to Springfield, Missouri, and later back to the Kansas City area, where he worked with an architectural firm before founding his own practice in Liberty. His notable projects included Safeway stores in the Kansas City area, a Budweiser beer warehouse, a McDonald’s bakery in Kansas, and the Liberty Triangle shopping center.
As a university student, Stewart displayed talent in wood sculpting and painting. Later, he designed and built a modern, serene home for his family. Together, he and Rosie shared a loving partnership dedicated to creating a warm and inviting home. In his leisure time, he enjoyed home projects and partnered with Rosie on landscaping and gardening. They cared for stray animals, welcoming pets such as a parakeet and kittens into their home.
Known for his good-natured and humorous disposition, Stewart loved comedies and sports. He explored new experiences, from trying ethnic cuisines to adopting smart technology. A curious reader and a keen genealogist, Stewart explored books, magazines, and family history.
Stewart also had a passion for food, savoring his mother-in-law’s cooking and Rosie’s quick, delicious meals. His bean soup, sandwiches, and burgers were family favoritesonce serving burgers as a memorable Christmas dinner.
Stewart exemplified hard work and integrity throughout his life, from delivering ice in high school and stacking bowling pins at a local alley while pursuing his architectural studies, to dedicating long hours as an architect. He was a devoted husband and father who will be deeply missed. Stewart was a supportive father, admired and loved by his daughters.
Preceding Stewart in death were his wife, Rosie, and his sister, Jeanette Gaskill. He is survived by his daughters, Sharman Shepherd (Ron Crawford), and Sara Shepherd (Dr. Amer Hassan); his granddaughter, Colleen Howard; his two great-grandchildren, Timothy (Tim) Cook, and Alana Cook Hostin; and his three great-great-grandchildren, Mikayla Strough, and twins Malachi and Victoria Hostin. He cherished his niece, Diana Cantlon Brown.
Private interment will follow at a later date beside Rosie in Fairview Cemetery, Liberty, Missouri. Donations to the Disabled American Veterans organization are appreciated (dav.org).
